Weezer cites a variety of musical influences, one of the most important being Nirvana.
In fact, Weezer and Nirvana were on the same label briefly before Kurt Cobain died.
The lyrics to the song "Susanne" were originally "Even Kurt Cobain and Axl Rose" instead of "Even Izzy, Slash, and Axl Roseâ The lyrics were changed after Cobain's death.
There is also a direct reference to Nevermind in the track "Heart Songs," from The Red Album.
Weezer covered "Velouria" by the Pixies for a Pixies tribute album in 1998, and in briefly toured with them for a few dates in 2005.
Weezer also cites KISS as a heavy influence, who they reference in the song âIn the Garage.â
Weezer's first gig was opening for Keanu Reeves' band Dogstar.
There is a direct lyric about Green Day, another influence, in the song, "El Scorcho." The lyric reads âI asked you to go to the Green Day concert â¦You said you never heard of them â¦How cool is that?â
Friends of Green Day, Weezer also contributed the song "Worry Rock" to Different Shade Of Green: A Green Day Tribute.
An early Weezer demo, âPaperface,â is very reminiscent of Nirvana and the Pixies, another one of their influences.
Weezer briefly played Nirvana and Oasis covers under the moniker Goat Punishment as a brief side project.
