Free Subway Rides For Many Today on One-Year Anniversary of Hurricane Sandy

Gov. Cuomo's good will gesture to MTA riders on the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy may be facing a few hiccups. The NY Times reports that Cuomo's plan to let R train riders in Brooklyn and A train riders in Howard Beach and the Rockaways in Queens ride for free today, could result in free rides for many more riders.

The free rides began at midnight today and will run until 11:59pm tonight. However, the NY Times reports that the actual implementation of this plan is proving to be rather difficult. The R train connects with 12 other lines in Brooklyn, making it hard for the MTA to prevent other riders from taking advantage of the free rides.

Officials opened the gates for the R train after midnight today and are hoping only R train riders take advantage. Cuomo's administration believes that people will honor the system in place and very few riders from other lines will take advantage of the free rides.
