Firefighter Killed in Wallington, NJ

A firefighter died after falling off the roof of a building while fighting a blaze in Wallington, New Jersey.

Fire Captain Gregory Barnas was a veteran of the Jersey City Fire Department, while also volunteering in Wallington since 1972.

"It's a sad day, it's a tragic day," said Wallington Fire Commissioner Mark Tomko.  "Our department and I know our community is mourning a loss.  Our hearts go out to the family."

The fire broke out at a Japanese restaurant on Paterson Avenue around 1:30 Friday morning.  Barnas was cutting a hole in the roof when he fell.

"I can't even think of the words to express our sorrow.  Our department is deeply hurt," said Tomko.

Barnas has two sons who are also firefighters.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
